Academy Rules

Be Safe
 

  1. All students share the responsibility of keeping the Academy safe and clean.

  2. Students must properly wear clean, odor-free attire all times.  Instructors have the right to deny training if a student’s attire is unsanitary.

  3. Footwear/Flip-flops must be worn when off the mats.

  4. All students are required to report any injury, health, or skin condition to their instructor prior to class. Any skin condition must be addressed immediately before a class begins.

  5. Skin checks may be done by the staff to ensure safety. If you believe someone has a problem please let the instructor know privately.

  6. All students must keep fingernails and toenails short

  7. Obscene language, ill temperament, or discrimination will not be tolerated at the Academy. Control your temper at all times while training.

  8. Do not abuse your knowledge of martial arts. Martial arts should only be used to protect yourself and others.​

Be Respectful

  1. Bow towards the flags when getting onto and off of the mats

  2. Students must always show respect to all peers and instructors. Please treat everyone with courtesy.

  3. Please do not arrive late to class or leave early. If you must, obtain permission from your instructor first. If late, bow in and wait on the edge of the mat for the instructor to let you on.

  4. During class minimize idle time, and unnecessary chatter. This is of particular importance when the instructor is speaking or demonstrating a technique.

  5. Yield mat space to higher belts when training.

  6. Bow/Shake hands/touch gloves before sparring

  7. The Academy does not hold itself responsible for any lost, damaged, or stolen items. Please do not leave any gear or equipment overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear to my first BJJ class or Muay Thai Class?
For your first class, you can wear comfortable athletic wear like a t-shirt and shorts. If you have a gi (traditional martial arts uniform) for BJJ, you can wear that as well. We ask you to remove jewelry or piercings to ensure safety.
 
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on ground fighting and submission holds. It emphasizes technique, leverage, and strategy to overcome opponents.     
 
What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai, also known as the "Art of Eight Limbs," is a martial art and combat sport from Thailand that uses punches, kicks, elbows, and knee strikes. It's known for its powerful strikes, clinch techniques, and emphasis on physical conditioning.

Is BJJ and Muay Thai suitable for beginners?
Our Foundations BJJ curriculum is designed to accommodate all skill levels, from complete beginners to advanced practitioners. Our instructors will guide you through the basics and ensure you are comfortable with the techniques before progressing to more advanced moves. 
For Muay Thai we have had absolute beginners start cracking the bag and Thai pads with minutes of their first class.                                                                                       
Do I need to be in shape to start BJJ or Muay Thai?
No prior fitness level is required to start BJJ and/or Muay Thai. Training in BJJ and/or Muay Thai will naturally improve your fitness over time. Our classes are structured to help you build strength, endurance, and flexibility at your own pace.                                          
 
How often should I train in BJJ and/or Muay Thai?
Consistency is key in training. We recommend training 2-3 times a week to see steady progress. However, you can adjust your training frequency based on your personal goals and schedule.

Will I get hurt practicing BJJ/Muay Thai?
While both are physical contact sports, our instructors emphasize proper technique and controlled training to minimize the risk of injury. We encourage all students to communicate with their training partners and instructors to ensure a safe learning environment.
